Just north of Troy, Montana, along the Rabbit O'brien Road, fuels reduction treatments are in full swing. The focus is to construct a 7.5 mile shaded fuel break and an 18 mile line-of-defense that will help protect over 150 private properties in the project area by modifying wildfire behavior, protecting homes, and providing safer egress and firefighting conditions. The Rabbit Tracts Forest Partnership Project addresses most aspects of the Montana Forest Action Plan (MFAP) including forest health, wildfire risk, working forest and economics, biodiversity and habitat conservation, urban and community forests, human and community health, and sustaining cross-boundary work. Funding for the project was provided by a state-wide grant offered by the Montana Forest Action Plan. Partners include Stimson Lumber Company (SLC), Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), US Forest Service (FS), Lincoln County (LC), Northern Lights (NLI), and Vital Ground. This video was created to help explain the importance of the project, why it's happening, and to communicate with our fellow Lincoln County residents the great work that is being done on our landscape.
